Small Group GCSE Combined Science for Year 10 and 11 at Elite Tutors

Every parent wants their child to get proper attention when it matters most, and with GCSEs on the horizon, Year 10 is where the real groundwork gets laid.
That is why our small group GCSE science tuition is capped at just three students. As professionals, we base our decisions on research and evidence, not guesswork, convention or what fills a group fastest, and the Education Endowment Foundation’s own research shows that small group tuition can lead to significant additional progress over a school year, but only when the group stays genuinely small. Three is where the evidence and educational research suggests the balance sits best, as well as what we have found in practice, enough for a bit of healthy peer learning, small enough that no child gets lost.
This programme is suitable for students working towards a grade 5, 6 or 7, following the AQA Combined Science Trilogy specification.

How the Programme Works

These are live online GCSE science sessions. The sessions for Year 10 run on Wednesday at 7pm for a full hour, in term time blocks of 10 weekly sessions, with breaks over the school holidays. The current block runs from the week beginning 21st September through to the week ending 6th December.

Year 11 sessions will be general revision, exam technique and exam paper support and guidance. The sessions will be tailored to the group. The sessions will run in Wednesdays at 8pm for one hour with the same course length/dates as above.

The full programme covers three blocks across the year, moving through biology, chemistry and physics in step across each term. Each block builds on the last, and every Yr 10 session is planned against the Year 10 curriculum and the AQA Combined Science Trilogy specification, so what your child covers with us lines up with what they are doing in school:

Autumn term
  • Week 1: Revision techniques, exam technique and structure
  • Week 2: Biology, B1 Cell biology
  • Week 3: Chemistry, C1 Atomic structure and the periodic table
  • Week 4: Physics, P1 Energy
  • Week 5: Biology, B2 Organisation
  • Week 6: Chemistry, C2 Bonding and elements
  • Week 7: Physics, P2 Electricity
  • Weeks 8 to 10: Mock exam preparation, Paper 1, biology, chemistry and physics in turn
Spring term
  • Week 1: Biology, B3 Infection and response
  • Week 2: Chemistry, C3 Quantitative chemistry
  • Week 3: Physics, P3 Atomic structure and the particle model
  • Week 4: Biology, B4 Bioenergetics
  • Week 5: Chemistry, C4 Chemical and energy changes
  • Week 6: Physics, P4 Forces
  • Week 7: Exam technique and structure
  • Weeks 8 to 10: Mock exam preparation, Paper 2, biology, chemistry and physics in turn
Summer term

Focused on exam practice and revisiting topics as needed, based on how each student is progressing:

  • Week 1: Exam technique and strategy
  • Weeks 2 to 10: Rotating exam question practice across biology, chemistry and physics, topics B1 to B4, C1 to C4 and P1 to P4

Suitable for Grade 5, 6 and 7, AQA Combined Science

The core programme is designed for students working towards a grade 5 to 7, covering the full breadth of biology, chemistry and physics across the Trilogy specification. Where a child needs more time on a particular topic, whether that is Autumn’s cell biology and energy or Spring’s infection and response, we build that into the sessions as we go, based on how they are progressing.

How We Match Groups

We group students of a similar grade together, so no one is left behind or out of their depth, and each student gets the right amount of stretch at the right time. This thoughtful matching is part of what makes small group tuition work, rather than simply filling three spaces.

If a group does not reach three students, we will offer your child one to one lessons at our usual one to one rate instead, so their learning is not delayed.

What Each Session Looks Like

Sessions move through biology, chemistry and physics in a clear, structured order, always with revision and exam technique built in from the very first week. Two dedicated mock exam preparation blocks are built into the programme, one at the end of Autumn and one at the end of Spring, so students get real exposure to exam conditions well before their actual mocks. The Summer term is kept deliberately flexible, focused on exam practice and revisiting whichever topics the group most needs, based on how they have progressed across the year.

You’ll receive a short report after every session, so you can follow your child’s progress week by week. Alongside that, most parents notice real changes in confidence, and over time, in how their child is doing with science at school.

Who Teaches These Groups?

Every Year 10 science group is led by a qualified and experienced science teacher, someone who knows the GCSE curriculum inside out because they have taught it in a real classroom, not just tutored from a textbook. As with every tutor we recommend at Elite Tutors, they hold an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List search, the highest level of safeguarding check available in the UK. We also check the Teaching Regulation Agency’s prohibition register, confirming a tutor has not been barred from teaching, a step we believe no other agency in Sussex currently takes. Alongside this, our tutors bring the kind of subject expertise and evidence led approach that means your child is learning with someone who genuinely understands both the content and how children learn it best.

Booking and Fees

Families can sign up a term at a time or commit to the full year. There’s a small one time £38 enrolment fee at the beginning to secure your child’s place, and sessions are then £38 per student, payable as you go. Booking a place means committing to the full block of 10 sessions, and because groups are capped at three, that commitment holds even if your child misses a session or you decide not to continue, the full amount for the block remains payable and sessions are non refundable.

Spaces in each small group maths class are limited to three students, so blocks fill fast. If you would like to secure your child’s place, sign me up now and one of our team will be in touch to confirm the details and take payment.

Sessions are delivered live online, so your child can join from home on a laptop or tablet.

Sessions follow state school term times, running in term time only with breaks over the school holidays.

The session will be rearranged and caught up at a different time, so your child never loses that week’s learning.

Yes. Each block moves through all three sciences in turn, with dedicated mock exam preparation for each subject built in at the end of Autumn and Spring term.

Yes. As with every tutor we recommend at Elite Tutors, your child’s maths tutor holds an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List search, and we also check the Teaching Regulation Agency’s prohibition register, a step we believe no other agency in Sussex currently takes.

As sessions are small, live and interactive, we’re not able to offer catch up notes or recordings for missed sessions. Because groups are capped at three, each week builds on what the group covered together the week before, so we’d always encourage keeping attendance as consistent as possible across the block.
