When explaining the idea of therapy to your child, describe it as a place where an adult helps them identify and express their feelings.
Highlight that this could be a positive experience, especially if they find certain things challenging. Reassure your child that they will have the chance to meet their tutor first who will explain everything before they decide to participate. Emphasise that therapy is a safe space for them to talk about their ideas and feelings. Let them know they might have opportunities to draw, paint, play with stuffed animals, or engage in games, making the experience enjoyable.

What to Expect from Play Therapy Sessions
Your child will start with a minimum of 12 weekly sessions, each approximately 40 minutes long. These sessions occur at the same time and place each week, creating a consistent and secure environment. In these non-directive sessions, your child is encouraged to take the lead in play, allowing them to express themselves openly and naturally.
Following the initial 12 sessions, additional sessions can be booked in blocks of 4, with a 4-session notice period required for any changes. Around the 8-week mark, a meeting between the therapist and parents will be held to discuss progress and determine the need for further sessions.
Building a trusting therapeutic relationship takes time, so please allow for several weeks for this process to develop. Concluding therapy is also a crucial part of the experience, and adequate time will be provided to ensure this transition is managed thoughtfully and respectfully.
How will the sessions work?
We will conduct an initial interview before the sessions begin and another once they are complete. Throughout the process, you are welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns. To ensure the best experience for your child, we request that parents and carers refrain from asking children about their activities or enjoyment during the sessions. This helps maintain the child’s sense of safety and autonomy in the playroom. Children are encouraged to share if they wish, but it is important to respect their decision to keep their play experiences private. This will be clearly explained to your child during our first meeting.
