A Local Insight into Outstanding State Boarding

As a local tutoring agency, we have an in-depth understanding of schools across our county and beyond. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Steyning Grammar School, a state boarding school in a historic village setting. During my visit, I toured the facilities and met with Tom Leighton, Head of Boarding, whose dedication to creating a supportive, enriching environment is inspiring. The boarding facilities, are comparable to those of some independent schools (and my own University halls in fact), offering students a comfortable and supportive environment in which to learn and grow.

As one of only 35 state boarding schools in the UK, Steyning Grammar offers an accessible alternative to independent schools. With no tuition fees and competitive boarding fees, families gain access to high-quality education and boarding without the associated high costs.

Steyning Grammar’s boarding house is home to students from over 30 nationalities, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Its connections to the local church underpins a culture of acceptance, making it a welcoming environment.

The school offers flexible boarding options, including full, weekly, and tailored arrangements, allowing families to choose what works best for them. During my visit, I was impressed by the modern, well-maintained facilities designed to nurture independence. A Registered Nurse oversees student health, ensuring wellbeing is a priority and maintaining a strong link between the school and parents.

Tom Leighton and his dedicated team ensure the boarding experience is as supportive as it is enriching. As he explained, “State boarding offers affordability without compromising on quality. Our boarding team provides a nurturing environment where students can excel both academically and personally.”

Wellbeing and Student Voice

Student wellbeing is a cornerstone of life at Steyning Grammar. With dedicated Houseparents, a registered nurse on-site, and a strong pastoral team, students are supported and encouraged to take ownership of their development. This approach helps foster confidence and resilience, key traits for success both in and out of the classroom.

Evening and weekend activities are thoughtfully planned, including sports, cultural outings, and trips, offering boarders a rich array of opportunities as part of the boarding package with the student’s able to make decisions and suggestions about their out-of-school activities.

Academic Strength and University Success

Steyning Grammar’s academic provision is robust, offering a wide range of GCSE, A-level, and BTEC options to suit varied aspirations. The school’s structured GCSE programme ensures students are well-prepared, while tailored, 1:1 UCAS guidance supports Sixth Formers through university applications. The results speak for themselves, with 84% of students securing places at their first-choice universities.

A Balanced Look at Ofsted

In 2022, Ofsted rated Steyning’s boarding provision as outstanding, with the Sixth Form achieving a ‘Good’ rating. However, the school’s overall grade was affected by a ‘Requires Improvement’ for lower-school behaviour, reflecting challenges common in schools post-pandemic. Ofsted highlighted the leadership’s proactive approach in addressing these concerns. While inspection reports are an important consideration, they are only part of the picture. Schools must also be the right fit for families, meeting the specific needs of students and aligning with parents’ aspirations. Visiting the school, as I did, can provide valuable insight into its ethos, environment, suitability, safeguarding and high standards.

As a Boarding Schools Association member, Steyning Grammar maintains rigorous safeguarding protocols to ensure student safety. The school also partners with UK Guardian agencies, further supporting its international students and enhancing its comprehensive care approach.

Preparing Students for Life

Boarding at Steyning Grammar is about more than academic achievement; it’s a preparation for life. Students are encouraged to manage their routines, complete practical tasks, and take on responsibilities that foster independence and resilience. The on-site gym and enrichment opportunities further enhance the boarding experience, helping students grow holistically.

With our local expertise, I can confidently say that Steyning Grammar School offers a compelling option for families considering the little-known arena of state boarding. The facilities rival those of some independent schools, and the school’s emphasis on community, quality education, and affordability is impressive.
